5 Ways to Stay Motivated When Job Hunting

Job hunting is hard! It’s easy to feel as though you are the only one struggling to get hired. Don’t worry; the process takes time and it is normal to feel discouraged at times. Below are a few reminders and tips to help you stay motivated.

1. Remember You’re Not Alone

Not hearing back from employers? You’re not alone. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2022), it takes a job seeker an average of five to six months to get a job. Hang in there.

If you’ve been job hunting for a long time and are not seeing results, you may want to reevaluate your approach. Have a friend in your industry or career coach review your materials. Ask a recruiter to assess your LinkedIn profile.

2. Attract Recruiters with Your LinkedIn Profile

Are you job hunting, but don’t have a LinkedIn profile? You’re likely missing out on opportunities, because many recruiters use LinkedIn to search for candidates.

3. Don’t Let the Requirements List Intimidate You

Studies show that most women only apply for jobs which they feel they’re 100% qualified. Whereas most men apply for jobs when they meet only 60% of the requirements.

It’s okay to apply for jobs when you do not meet every requirement. If you think that you would be a good fit for the role, then apply. Use your cover letter to make a strong case for why they should hire you.

4. Set Job Seeking Goals & Reward Yourself

It’s no secret that job hunting is exhausting. Make it a better experience by setting small, achievable goals and rewarding yourself when you achieve them.

Set a goal of applying to a certain number of applications within a timeline that feels challenging, but realistic for you. Avoid only using LinkedIn and Indeed’s “Easy Apply” buttons by including tailored application materials.

Once you’ve accomplished each goal, allow yourself time to recharge and avoid feeling burnt out by the process. Rewards can be as simple as taking the time to read a new book or watch a movie. 5. Have Self-Compassion

Have self-compassion by reminding yourself of everything that you’re doing right. By continually taking action and applying, you’re doing great! Focus on what you can bring to an organization, and how they will benefit by hiring you. Don’t be too hard on yourself! In time, you’ll find the right job.
